Travel and Explore Highest Mount in East Java

Indonesia has many volcanoes are still active. One of the popular travel site is Mount Semeru, the highest volcano in Java.


Mount Semeru or Sumeru is the highest volcano in Java, with Mahameru peak, 3676 meters above sea level. The volcano is still active to this day.

The mountain is in the area of ​​Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. This national park consists of mountains and valley area of ​​50,273 hectares. From the top of Semeru, you can see other mountains, such as Bromo, Batok, Watangan, Chairs, and Widodaren.

It takes about four days to climb the peak of Mount Semeru round-trip. To climb Mount Semeru, the trip can be taken by the city of Malang or Lumajang.

When climbing, you will find a heaven. Heaven is Kumbolo Ranu, a lake at the foot of Mount Semeru. Leaving Ranu Kumbolo, you will climb a steep hill, with beautiful views over the lake behind.

In front of the hill lies a vast prairie called the oro-oro Ombo. Oro-oro Ombo surrounded by hills and mountains with beautiful views, wide meadows with pine-covered slopes as in Europe.

Heading further for hikers to rest is Kalimati. Post Kalimati located at an altitude of 2,700 m, here you can set up a tent to rest. This post is in the form of broad meadow at the edge of pine forest, so a lot of available twigs to build a fire.

Besides Kalimati, before the peak climbers typically rest on Arcopodo. Arcopodo within 1 hour of Kalimati through a very steep pine forest, with the land prone to landslides and dusty.

Arcopodo to the summit of Semeru takes 3-4 hours, through the dunes are very steep and easily degenerate. As a travel guide, at this point there are some small red triangular flag.

All luggage should stay Arcopodo or Kalimati. The climb to the summit should be done early in the morning at approximately 2:00 pm from Arcopodo.

At the peak of Mount Semeru (Peak Mahameru), you are advised not to the crater Jonggring Saloko, also banned climbing from the south side, because there are toxic gases and lava flows. The view from the top is very beautiful, like an ocean in the sky. When almost to the top, you will feel how to be on the cloud.

Be careful when you are traveling on top, because they often backfire Semeru and toxic gases. Soe Hok Gie, a prominent Indonesian activist and student at the Faculty of Letters, University of Indonesia, died at Mount Semeru in 1969 from inhaling toxic fumes at Mount Semeru.

The traveling time to climb should be done during the dry season, which is June, July, August, and September. Should not climb in the rainy season because of frequent storms and landslides. Do not forget to wear thick clothes to prevent hypothermia and goggles in order to protect the face from the rain of ash.
